The Modular Fairphone 2 Smartphone Released
Pin ItGoogle has showed off the Project Ara previously and it hinted that the commercial launch of the modular smartphone won’t be too far off. Apparently, a company called Fairphone has borrowed some of the ideas, by taking a middle road between standard smartphone and the Project Ara concept.
Although the Fairphone 2 is clearly modular, it is not as flexible as the Project Ara. In many ways, it still looks like a traditional smartphone, but Fairphone seems to be working hard to make it as serviceable as the Ara concept. Being a modular device, users should be able to replace internal components that they prefer and it is the same concept behind Google Project Ara.
We could simply replace the processor, RAM and camera. In all fairness, it could be rather difficult for consumers to do this by themselves. In reality, Fairphone 2 is more complicated than typical LEGO blocks. Users need to take the phone to a repair show to downgrade or upgrade it.
The Fairphone 2 is equipped with high-end components, such as Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor, 32GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM, 8Mp rear-facing camera, 2420mAh battery and dual-SIM slots. Fairphone is planning to release more modules for the phone, such as back cover with NFC connectivity and better cameras.
