Mozilla will soon release developer preview phones running the Firefox OS. Professionals skilled in mobile web development technology can use it to create third-party software. The device is developed by a Spain-based firm in partnership with Telefonica.
Other carriers in Europe have also expressed full support for Mozilla’s software platform including Telenor, Telecom Italia, Sprint, Smart, Etisalat and Deutsche Telekom. It comes with 3.5” HVGA display, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 single-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 3Mp rear-facing camera, microUSB port, microSD slot, GPS, accelerometer, WiFi and proximity sensor. The phone is unlocked to allow developers use any SIM card.
Firefox OS is developed using open Web standards, which allows web apps to run directly on Firefox mobile browser. Developers are able to sell downloadable mobile web apps in the Firefox marketplace. Like any mobile platforms, the Firefox OS can also handle basic tasks such as send SMS, make voice calls, access GPS and others.
