Current Windows Phone 7.5 Devices May Get WP 7.6 or 7.7 Instead
Right when we are all preparing for a major update to Windows Phone 8; a new rumor surfaced suggesting that Microsoft may have a slightly different plan. According to the source, Windows Phone 8 won’t be coming to current Windows Phone 7.5 Mango devices. Instead, these handsets supposedly will get Windows Phone 7.6 or 7.7. Clearly, this is going to be a feature update, rather than an entirely new WP version. The source said that it was a Nokia insider and a senior Microsoft manager who spilled the bean.
Tipsters further explained that an update to Windows Phone 8 isn’t technically possible because the new OS version requires different chipsets. Nevertheless, if the aforementioned Windows Phone 7.7 will bring as many as features we will get from Windows Phone 8 Apollo, the scenario may not be as bad as it seems After all, version numbers don’t really matter as long as they bring us many features that the more advanced version is capable of.
In any case, we should consider it as a rumor and everything may end up being quite close to the best prediction. The Windows Phone 8 will be officially unveiled later this month and we may hear a word or two about the Windows Phone 7.6 or 7.7 during the event.
